- Caps sized correctly for your flue(s)

A Local Wake-Up Call: The Uncapped Chimney
A homeowner in southeastern Massachusetts thought a cracked chimney cap was “no big deal.” Over time, rain ran straight down the flue, and birds used the opening to build a nest.
First came the musty smell in the living room. Then, after a heavy storm, water marks appeared around the fireplace, and the damper began to rust and stick. By the time they called for help, they weren’t just paying for a new cap—they were looking at interior repairs and a chimney clean-out.
When they called FC Home Improvement, we installed a properly sized cap with screening and set them up with a plan to keep the rest of the chimney system in good shape.
Why a Proper Chimney Cap Matters
- Helps keep water out
A cap helps deflect rain and snow away from the open flue, reducing moisture damage, rust, and interior staining. - Helps block animals and debris
Proper screening helps keep birds, squirrels, and debris from nesting in your chimney and blocking the flue. - Helps reduce spark and ember risk
Spark-arrestor styles help keep embers from exiting the top of the chimney and landing on roofs or nearby surfaces. - Helps protect your investment
Your chimney, fireplace, or heating appliance is a major system in your home. A correctly installed cap is a relatively small cost compared to water and animal damage.

Signs You Need Chimney Cap Service
You likely need a new or replacement chimney cap if you notice:
- No visible cap on top of the chimney
- A cap that’s visibly rusted, cracked, or leaning
- Birds, animals, or nests near the top of the chimney
- Water stains around the fireplace or on nearby walls/ceiling
- Strong musty or “wet ash” odors from the fireplace after rain
- Rust or corrosion on the damper or inside the firebox
If you see any of these, it’s time to have the cap and the top of the chimney checked.

Chimney Cap Service FAQs
Do I really need a chimney cap?
A chimney cap isn’t just a “nice extra”—it’s one of the main defenses against water, animals, and debris entering your chimney. A proper cap helps protect the flue, damper, and surrounding materials from moisture and nesting, and can also help reduce spark risk on some systems.
Can you install chimney caps on both fireplaces and heating appliance flues?
Yes. We install caps on flues serving wood-burning fireplaces as well as many gas or oil heating appliance flues, as long as the cap style is appropriate for that system. We’ll review your setup and make sure the cap is sized and selected correctly.
How do I know if my existing chimney cap needs to be replaced?
If the cap is missing, heavily rusted, cracked, bent, or no longer sitting level, it’s time to have it inspected. Other signs include water stains around the fireplace, musty odors, or signs of animals near the top of the chimney.
Will a chimney cap stop water leaks around the base of the chimney?
A cap helps stop water from going straight down the flue, but it does not fix leaks caused by damaged flashing or masonry at the roofline. If we suspect the leak is coming from flashing, crown, or brick issues, we may recommend chimney leak & flashing repair in addition to installing a cap.
How often should a chimney cap be inspected?
We recommend having the cap and top of the chimney visually checked at least once a year, and after major storms. During that inspection we look for rust, damage, loose hardware, or signs of water or animal entry.
Do you offer chimney cap service for small commercial or multi-family buildings?
Yes. We provide chimney cap installation and replacement for small commercial and multi-family properties, as long as the roofline, access, and chimney configuration are suitable for our equipment.
